Marcel, Gabriel

Marcel, Gabriel
(1889-1973)
   philosopher, dramatist
Born in Paris, Gabriel Marcel converted from Protestantism to Catholicism (1929) and became one of the proponents of Christian existentialism. Meditating on the concrete existence of the human in the world, in terms of relationships with others, Marcel opposed the idea of the "Avoir," that is, all that one can possess and therefore be alienated from, in contrast to the mystery of the "Être." Rejecting the pessimism of atheistic existentialism, he gave an important place to the transcendent and the encounter between the human and the divine through faith. Besides his philosophical works (Journal métaphysique, 1927; Être et Avoir, 1935; Homo viator, 1946; Le Mystère de l'Être, 1951), Marcel also published a number of works for the theater.
